Read the chapter "Viral Marketing" from Scott Stratten's book, Unmarketing.  Use the comments section below to respond to the following:

1. List and define each of Stratten's four secrets to successful viral marketing.

2. Post a quote from the reading that you found to be significant or interesting. Explain why you selected it.

3. Stratten argues against traditional business marketing strategies in favor of a more audience-centric entertainment approach (hence the title Unmarketing).  However, he still focuses heavily on conversions (turning followers into money-producing customers).  Do you buy into Stratten's approach?  Explain your reasoning.

  1. 1. The message is funny- funny is the most difficult to pull off.
2.The message has that WOW factor- something that has incredible value.
    3. The message evokes emotion- Does the message make you feel something.
    4. Viral marketing- Choosing the right method to create and distribute your project.

    2. "Viral marketing is not about you" I like this quote because all the content you put out is for your audience and getting them to want to engage and share the content you put out. If it wasn't for your audience and followers, your content would mean nothing. The audience is what gets your content noticed and out there.

    3. People will do whatever it takes to make quick money. And most people have no idea what goes on so they buy into it. What he did wasn't fair to his audience, theres certain ways to go about doing things and I think his approach wasn't the best.

  2. 1.
    1. Be funny, have the wow factor, or evoke emotion- If your message is funny has the wow factor or evokes emotion, it then gets a reaction from your consumer and then gives them more incentive to share your message.
    2. Viral marketing is not about you- you need to tailor your message for your audience. If you want to go viral you have to depend of your audience.
    3. Properly define your success- know why you want your message to go viral, and engage with your audience.
    4. Choose the right method to create and distribute your project- decide the best process to accomplish the goals you want to achieve with your project.

    2. “The day you start talking to your audience and it’s about them, that’s the day that business really happens.” I think this is a good quote because he is saying that you need to engage with your audience and when you engage with your audience you will see your project grow.

    3. I agree that you need to know your audience and center your approach on your target audience, but you should just do this to get money. If you only want to make money off your followers you might lose your audience, you can still make money off your audience but you still need to have a relationship and interactions with your audience.

  3. SECRET1: Pick one of the following areas to focus on.
    1. The message is Funny- The most difficult to pull off. It's more about being funny coming natural & not faking it.
2.The message has that WOW factor- It has to spontaneous, shocking, exciting, etc... Enough for someone to have to call someone else and tell them.
3.The message evokes emotion-Does this message make you feel something? Do you care? Emotional means it makes the hair on the back of you neck stand up.
SECRET2:Viral marketing is"not" about you, it's about your audience.
SECRET3:Properly define your success. Do you want to build a following? Why? Is it for your business? It's great for a business or a product but you have to say why.
SECRET4:Choosing the right method to create and dispute your project. Depending on your goals for your viral marketing project, you now need to decide what process you are going to use to get there. Your success is defined by what method you are going to use.

2."Stop trading dollars for hours and start scaling". What I get from this message is that you can always continue to build off of your ideas.

3.I feel that from a business standpoint it's very smart. The more views, potentially the more money. The more you appeal to an audience, the more they like what they're seeing and begin to spread/ share it, the more potential money comes in. It's done everyday when people go to a regular store and buy a shirt w/ their favorite sports team logo or disney character. People see others with these trendy shirts on (kids/adults) they like it, they buy it. All the while they're actually paying to advertise.

  4. 1.
-The message is funny-Has to be holding your gut laughing kind of funny.
-The message has that wow factor-Has to have pop or splash factor to become viral.
-The message evokes emotion-Would a person care,do not be emotionless.Try to interact in some way with the audience.
-Viral marketing-choose the right platform to distribute your product.

2.When he says "You know what we want in life, right? We just want validation. That's human nature" it is so true. If we aren't getting something out of something or being noticed we are more likely to stop and not care.

    3. I do agree most of the aspects with his approach. Money is the key, if there is quick money to gain we are likely to do it which doesn't acknowledge. Money can't be the only thing. If I was to do something just for the money I am likely to be behave like I do not care. Maybe I wouldn't be as good if I have no passion to do the job in hand. You need to interact with the people around you positively or you might lose them.

  5. 1. Focus on one of the next areas: The message is funny (the most difficult), the message has that WOW factor, (“I’ve got to show this to somebody”), the message evokes emotion (“who else do I want to show this to?”) or we can also incentive the audience, which it does not result natural. Something that motives people to share your issue.
    2. Viral marketing is not about you; it is about audience. Is not the author who calls viral a video, but the audience, the market and their positive reactions.
    3. To being successful in viral marketing is to properly define your success. Define what you want the viral thing to do. Also related to the last pages of the chapter were Scott Stratten explain why you should be ready to success.
    4. Choosing the right method to create and distribute your project. For example, flash video, live video, streaming video, and social media; but do it properly. Something that is good to start the relationship building and engagement are presenting an emotion and connecting one-to-one with people.

The quote chosen is a tip, as the most of the chapter is dedicated to. The author, through his “trial and error” experience cannot tell us what exactly do, but he can suggest us what not to do in viral marketing. One of the examples is:
“Please learn from my pain. The pain of success stinks if you’re not ready for it. Be ready for it. Have things in place. Everybody reading this book could help each other out just by talking about the mistakes you have made and what you have learned.” (199)
I consider the quote important because we all want success in what we do but most of the times we are not ready to assimilate properly the responsibilities and consequences that success brings. I believe that, to “successfully success”, we have to make mistakes. This example makes us think that we should have a plan to harness the outcomes of our doings.

I do agree in his argument against the traditional business marketing strategies because we have proved that audiences look for content that entertain them and makes them stay to get engage and motivates them to contribute in make something viral. Otherwise, they have so many options to get entertained, and these options are our competence. As we have to think in our business and conversions when we launch something, we now have to think in what our audience expect from us to make the content interesting and shareable.

  6. 1. A funny message- Not the kind of funny that gets you giggling for a few minutes, we are talking hard to breath, hysterical laughing.

    2. WoW Factor- A serious eye catcher, something that will give the audience a sense of aw.

    3. Conveying Emotion- Making the audience feel a certain type of emotion will really carve that experience into their brain.

    4. Viral Marketing- Acquiring the best overall platform that will fit and satisfy your needs in order to grab the viewers attention.

"What are your followers worth to you" What is a follower? What does a follower desire? What can I do to fill their needs? When you discover the potential worth of a follower, you understand what it takes to get more and how to retain them. In order to have a nice audience, you need to be able to give a satisfying service. I chose this quote because I think the most important part of the internet is the users who use it. The most important part of a business is the customers who consume their products. People are key to a successful anything.

I personally believe that the new business strategy is perfectly fine. The larger the audience that you acquire, the more money you real in. The overall goal is to make money, the overall goal of a consumer is to spend it. If you can win over the user, then you can most definitely win the money.

  7. 1) Secret 1: Pick one of the following 3 as an area to focus on: providing humor, a wow factor, or evoking emotion
Secret 2: Viral marketing is about your audiences feelings, thoughts and reactions, not about you
Secret 3: Properly define your success goal/s
Secret 4: Choosing the right method to create and distribute your project

    2) “Position yourself as a provider of emotion your market wants to feel. Which emotion doesn’t matter, as long as it is about your product… If you are able to provide emotions to an interested audience, you will have business for the rest of your life.”
This is obviously not the first time I’ve heard a statement like this. But I’m glad to have learned this now and read about examples that Stratten gives. I have a feeling one day down the road when I’m more established within my area of study, knowing about the emotional engagement factor will help me thrive in the social media world.

    3) His approach does sound believable and sensible to me. It’s probably true that drawing people in and then instantly asking for money will turn most of them away. And his approach of getting the attention, then engagement from those users over a longer period of time might end up with a higher conversion rate in the end.

  8. 1. Secret 1 - Your marketing must have either humor, a WOW factor or evoke emotion.
Secret 2 - Making your marketing about your audience and their feelings, thoughts and opinions.
Secret 3 - Appropriately defining what you want your goals to be.
Secret 4 - Choosing the right method to show off your project.

    2. "The gold is in the engagement of your lists and the relationship you have with the list of members." This is extremely important in my opinion. When marketing, you want your audience to feel as though they know you well-enough to consider you a friend almost. They will then trust you, become loyal and even share your content with other people.

    3. I agree with his argument. His tips, tricks and secrets pertain more to the age of now than other ones I've seen before. He speaks of getting and keeping the attention of an audience. When placing the ideas and thoughts of your viewers before your own, you are able to work better.

  9. 1. Secret 1: Focus on making a message funny, having a WOW factor, or evoking emotion.
Secret 2: Viral marketing is NOT about you, it's about your audience.
Secret 3: Properly define your success.
Secret 4: Choose the right method to create and distribute your project.

2."People say that they just want their project to go viral, but they don't think about the why."
I found this quote interesting because it is true. Most people's reason for wanting to go viral is so that they can have attention and be "famous." They usually never really have good intentions for going viral like, for example, spreading the word about an important cause and what people can do to help. People want to go viral because they see all the attention that other people get and they want to get that attention too but they don't really have a good reason for it besides that they just want it.

    3. I think Stratten's approach works more because he is focused on the audience instead of money. People like to feel like they matter and like other people truly care about them rather than feel like just another dollar in their wallet. This approach is what attracts an audience and makes a successful campaign.

  10. 1. Secret 1: be funny- roll on the floor laughing funny
Secret 2: wow factor- having something so amazing or amazingly stupid that you just have to show people and those people will just have to show more people
Secret 3: evokes emotion - make people feel one way or another, happy, sad, angry, make them think, question things
Secret 4- viral marketing: the fact that the things you create can not be about you or even for you, they must be for your audience, to make your audience feel, laugh, be amazed

    2. "You want to build a business and have people flock to you? Position yourself." It goes back to understanding your audience and what they want. Put yourself in their shoes and give them what they want. Position yourself to be the person they need and you want to be.

    3. I do believe in Strattens reasoning ans logic. He turned what big businesses do and how they market in a way that works for him. He gets into the mind of the people that you turn into money.

  11. Secret 1- pick one of the follow areas-funny, wow fact, evokes emotion
Secret 2- your viral project is not about YOU
    Secret 3- define your success
Secret 4- choosing the right method to create and distribute your project

“ No matter what state the economy is in, emotion always sells” I found this quote interesting because it’s true, people are always attracted through emotion, no matter what you throw in, any type of emotion, you always benefit.

I buy Strattens approach because he utilized going viral in a beneficial way, he gains user's attention through a series of ways but mostly through what they wanted, what potential emotion the customers wanted to feel or were feeling at the moment, He took what the people wanted and benefited from just listening.

  12. 1. Secret 1 - The message is funny, has the WOW factor, or evokes emotion. Being funny can be the hardest and having the wow factor can be very powerful.
Secret 2 - Viral Marketing is not about you. It’s about your audience, they dictate whether something is viral or not.
Secret 3 - Properly define your success. Think about why you want a project to go viral. Do you want sales, do you want to build a following, what do you want to get out of it.
Secret 4 - Choosing the right method to create and distribute your project. Your success is defined by what method you choose. Some options are flash video, live video, streaming video, and social media.

    2. “A fourth way to get people to send things out is to give them incentives (e.g. commissions, as an affiliate, prize giveaways for the most tweets), but its not natural and they usually have a short lifespan.” I think that this is totally true, whenever I follow someone online and they post something on their instagram or twitter that’s sponsored by a company, it’s kind of a turn off because it’s not genuine.

    3. I agree with Stratten’s approach, the audience is what’s going to drive your campaign, you have to focus on what they want to get out of your project. If you don’t have an audience-centric campaign it will have a very short lifespan. If you have a strong following and longevity then you can easily make money.
