Final Reading Assignment due 4/26
Please read these two articles, but DO NOT answer the questions in the comments section. Instead, come to class prepared with your answers in hopes of engaging in a valuable class discussion/seminar.
Read danah boyd's speech from the 2010 SXSW Conference entitled "Making Sense of Privacy and Publicity."
1. Despite all the technologies that now invade our lives, why does boyd argue that privacy is not dead?
2. For what reasons does boyd reject the public/private binary?
3. What does boyd mean when she calls privacy today an "inversion of defaults?"
4. Share your thoughts on the following quote from boyd:
"Just because something is publicly accessible does not mean that people want it to be publicized."
Read the following excerpts from Evgeny Morozov's book, Net Delusion
"How to Lose Face on Facebook" pp. 155-163
"Think, Search, Cough" pp. 163-167
1. What entity would you trust more in operating a social media platform: private enterprise or government?
2. On page 157, Morozov disagrees with Jared Cohen of the U.S. State Department, who stated that social media provided Iranians freedom of expression and information. Do you think Cohen's statement would be accurate for citizens of the US?
3. When was the last time you cleared your computer's browser history and cookies? Are you more likely to do that after reading Morozov's work?
4. Is "security by obscurity" a solution to surveillance?
5. When (if ever) is it acceptable for the "secret police" be involved with social media/digital surveillance? Should there be limits? What laws should there be?
